According to Axios, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned the G7 that Iran could attack Israel as early as Monday, August 5. In a call with US allies, Blinken aimed to exert urgent diplomatic pressure on Iran and Hezbollah to avoid an all-out regional war.
Blinken clarified that the recent deployment of U.S. warships and fighter jets to the Middle East was purely for defensive purposes.
The G7 ministers issued a statement expressing deep concern over the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, fearing that the escalation could lead to a wider conflict. The statement urged all parties to avoid a cycle of violent retaliation, ease tensions, and work to de-escalate the situation, and stressed that further escalation of the situation would not benefit any country.
