The Public Ministry has requested an arrest warrant for four people involved in the murder of Orlando Figuera during the 2017 protests.
The information was released on Wednesday by Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab.
The arrest warrant targets Ángel Daniel Sucre Cova, Kleiver José Hernández, Yuber Enrique Rodríguez Villa and Elio Enrique Carrasquel Azócar.
He also assured that he had reopened the extradition request for Enzo Franchini, the man primarily responsible for the incident.
Saab said Figuera’s death during the so-called “guarimbas” became “a symbol of fascism and criminality that can lead to a person being criminalized for the way they look and dress.”
In line with this idea, he urged the King of Spain and the Spanish authorities to proceed with the extradition of Franchini so that he could face justice in Venezuela.
He recalled that in October 2017, his Office requested the arrest of Franchini for public incitement, terrorism and qualified intentional homicide, and that on June 10, 2019, Franchini was arrested in Spain following the issuance of an Interpol Red Alert.
What happened to Orlando Figuera?
According to media reports, Orlando Figuera died on June 4, 2017 after being attacked during protests against Nicolás Maduro that year.
Before his death, Orlando blamed the attack on a group of people with whom he had a disagreement over work: “Malandrín”; “Freckles”; “Young”; “Oriental” and “Monkeys”.
The day after Orlando Figuera’s death, Attorney General Luisa Ortega Díaz denied that Figuera was the victim of a hate crime or that he was targeted because of his chavista status, as the government version claimed.
To date, no one has been tried for Figuera’s murder.
According to the public sector, on May 20, 2017, in the Altamira district of the municipality of Chacao, 22-year-old Orlando Figuera found himself at a protest with a subject with whom he had previously had an altercation. The man attacked him with a knife after seeing him at a workplace in Miranda Park and began to shout at the crowd, accusing him of stealing in order to be attacked.
According to information provided by the Prosecutor’s Office in the balance of victims killed and injured during the demonstrations from April to June 2017:
(…) He met a person with whom he had had an altercation at a workplace in Miranda Park and stabbed him with a knife. When the man saw him, he immediately attacked him with a knife, causing him injuries, and began to shout to nearby protesters, “This guy is stealing”, causing the crowd to physically and verbally attack him. He had multiple stab wounds on his body, and someone poured gasoline on him and set him on fire.
Figuera was later transferred to the Domingo Luciani Hospital in La Nito with the help of members of the Salud Chacao, where authorities took his statement. Figuera was taken to the hospital with first and second degree burns covering 80% of his body and multiple stab wounds.
In his testimony, Orlando accused a group of people nicknamed “Malandrín”; “Freckles”; “Young”; “Oriental”; “Monkey” whom he knew at work but with whom he was opposed for work reasons; Keylis Alexander Sierra was identified as the author of the material that set Figuera on fire.
