PARIS | The Bahamian sprinter was left stunned at the Stade de France when lane three was left empty during the fourth run of the first round.
The 28-year-old has been battling injuries recently, but he remains a contender for the 2024 Paris Olympics. He won the gold medal in Tokyo in 43.85 seconds, beating Anthony Zambrano and Kilani James.
Last year, Gardner was injured in the 400m semifinal at the world championships in Budapest.
“It was pretty bad,” Gardner recalled of the injury, which was diagnosed as a two-millimeter tear in his right tendon. “Luckily I didn’t play, or I probably would have ripped it off the bone. So I’m just glad I was able to pull through and play again.”
Elsewhere, Britain’s Matt Hudson-Smith began his quest for gold, advancing smoothly all the way to the semi-finals.
