Reuters quoted sources as saying that the U.S. Department of Commerce will officially release new regulations in the coming weeks to ban the installation of Chinese software in self-driving and connected cars.
According to reports, the new regulations of the Ministry of Commerce will apply to self-driving cars above Level 3 that are approved for driving in the United States. This means that all Chinese-made cars undergoing self-driving tests in the United States will be affected.
The sources also pointed out that the Commerce Department will also ban vehicles equipped with advanced wireless connectivity developed in China from driving on U.S. roads.
The U.S. Department of Commerce announced in February that it would investigate whether China’s imports of connected vehicles threaten U.S. national security, and the public can comment on the issue before April 30.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in May that Washington may ban imports of Chinese vehicles with wireless connectivity or impose some restrictions, but will wait until public opinion is assessed before making a decision.
