The non-governmental organization Penal Forum reported on Saturday that it had recorded 988 arrests since July 29, the day after Venezuela’s presidential election, in which the opposition denounced the alleged fraud in the election of President Nicolás Maduro.
The organization said that among the detainees there are also 91 teenagers, including the number of arrests registered between July 29 and 10 a.m. on August 4 in the framework of the “post-election crackdown on protests.”
“We will continue to receive, verify and process complaints,” Gonzalo Himiob, the group’s vice president, said on the social network X account.
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Maduro the winner with 51.95% of the vote, while González’s candidate received 43.18%.
After the first results were released on Monday, the opposition quickly emerged to declare victory – they said they had won with more than 70% of the vote – and called for international support for a recount.
