Powerful drumming and dancing, dazzling bright costumes, thrilling performances and a never-ending energy on stage combine to create a mesmerizing spectacle at the 2024 Te Maeva Nui Festival at the National Hall.
Te Fuinga O Niva and Oire Tupapa gave a powerful and stirring performance of ura pa’u to the appreciative and screaming applause of the audience on Thursday night during the second day of the annual cultural festival.
The wonderful kapa rima performance by Atiu Enuamanu was also absolutely stunning, with the girls dressed in pretty pink costumes, while Vaka Puaikura had melodious songs and the dancers were dressed in subtle fluorescent yellow costumes.
Pukapuka Nassau’s rendition of his brilliant pe’e and Oire Nikao’s energetic rendition of his ute also enhanced the high standard of Thursday night’s spectacular performances.
Special guest artists for the evening included New Zealand-based kapa haka group Te Arawa and the local Kiribati community.
This year the theme for Te Maeva Nui is “Te au Tauranga Rongonui o taku enua/matekinanga – the key port and landing point for my island/tribe”.
Oire Nikao’s vehicle is named “Turou te Ariki Vaine Elisapeta Rua”, which is based on a historical event in the Cook Islands – the late Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Rarotonga International Airport in 1974 to open it.
The first part of the journey focuses on the awakening of the Matakinanga people and how they responded to the call to become a self-governing nation.
The second section looks back at Queen Elizabeth’s visit, and the final section focuses on “celebrating who we are and what we stand for.”
Atiu Enuamanu’s dazzling quintet, “Te tau-ranga manu reva o taku enua no Atiu-Enuamanu” depicts the following: Message: E kura e ka mai manu reva (parilere) to Atiu-Enuamanu; Second – The first bird lands on the Matavai Plain; Third – The second port of call on the continent today is Iotuaika, Totiko, Te Ana and Are Kava.
Costumes and props are based on the colours of Cessna Air Rarotonga aircraft – “muramura tarona, keregere, teatea e te kivakiva”.
The kapa rima performance at Vaka Puaikura is set against the backdrop of Mount Raemaru, with Vaitoko as its belly, Maungaroa as the sanctuary and the palace of Au Maru (of Tinomana Ariki) the fortress where the Tinomana chiefs reside.
Their performance explains that fishermen use the Vaitoko channel to catch fish. Vaitoko was also used as a trading point for ancestors to trade goods. Visitors must perform a purification ritual before coming ashore to cleanse them of any negative spiritual elements that they picked up while traveling at sea.
The title of Oire Tupapa’s ura pau is “Tuitui Ka Moana – Door of Opportunity and Unity”.
Tuitui Ka Moana, meaning “seam of the ocean”, is the Avarua Harbour.
Tupapa’s ura pa’u depicts the arrival of Vaka Marumaru Atua and the ceremony of Te Kiriti Maro Tai and the celebrations that followed.
“Tuitui ka Moana is a testament to the idea that a thriving community is built on both roots and future possibilities. It is ever-present, its importance woven into the fabric of life in Avarua. It is a beacon of opportunity, a symbol of unity, a reminder that the greatest journeys are those that bring us closer to each other and to the land we call home.”
Tonight from 7pm, imene pupu (choir) and imene tuki (traditional hymns) will be performed at Te Are Karioi Nui.
The 2024 Te Maeva Nui Festival will be held at 59day
Tomorrow’s Constitution Day celebrations will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Te Fuinga O Niva ura pa’u: We want to place it at the base of this tree, which is the most famous port in our country.
First position: Because we are standing at the messenger position on the first floor, it is the children who ask to see the car.
When our people see that the Bus has arrived, our sons and daughters will bring the Messenger to them.
We, the chiefs, will do away with the old name of the bus, which is “Vaka Maehaehake” and all speed will be removed.
Second Position: Our three groups will appear in the third position through our company.
The bus transport must reach Te Fuinga O Niva, where Avanui will transport it to Te papa in Hamore and then to Tau ava Tekinonga.
Season 3: We will introduce you to the events that Season 3 brings to our country. That is potato sacks, grain sacks, rice sacks, rice sacks, bread sacks, chicken boxes and more.
Tamaiti Samson, Junior Joapa, Nicolea Mateariki and Rahui Tautape Samson support the people of Te Fuinga O Niva (Manihiki and Rakahanga).
Puka Puka Nassau Urinal: Te tua tapapa – Our urinal is built on the Natini River on a small island called Nasau in Puka Puka. Today, the island has been discovered by us little people who want to be them. So the best way to go to Puka Puka is to go to Puka Puka and take the Nasau boat to Puka Puka. We don’t like Nasau because there are only a few of us. Current landing – Junior Ruarau.
