St. Joseph – Sporting CP and Alajuelens remained unbeaten in this weekend’s Costa Rican football championship, while current champions Saprissa lost in a home draw against Liberia.

Sporting Lisbon, led by head coach Hernan Medford, drew 2-2 at home with Guanacasteca and are leading the standings with 10 points after four games, while Alajuelens also achieved the same number of points with a 0-1 away win over Cartagenes on Sunday.

Sporting CP won the match 2-0 thanks to goals from Dorian Rodriguez and Giancarlo Gonzalez, but surrendered a tie in the final 10 minutes of the match thanks to a brace from attacker Johan Venegas.

This result deprived Sporting Lisbon of the possibility of remaining sole leader as it was hunted by Alajuelense of Brazilian-Costa Rican coach Alexandre Guimaraes.

A goal from midfielder Rashid Perkins helped Alajuelense to a resounding win over Catakines, who dropped to third place with seven points.

The current champions Saprissa wasted a chance to get close to the lead, also beating Libera 2-0 at home, but eventually gave up a draw. Saprissa is fourth with 7 points, the same as third-placed Cataquines.

Midfielder Jefferson Brenes opened the scoring for Saprissa, and Argentine Mariano Torres doubled the lead with a brilliant goal from a free kick.

However, Daniel Colindres’ penalty kick brought Liberia closer at the end of the first half, and Mexican striker Raul Vidal equalized the score near the end of the game.

Herediano drew 1-1 away to bottom-placed Santa Ana, dropping to fifth place with five points.

The first phase of the Costa Rican Football Apertura Championship lasts 22 days, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals. Efei
