The mayor of Saint-Denis, Mohamed Gnabaly, decided to close the Moroccan stand at Station Afrique, a fan zone inside the Olympic Village. Thus, the political leader reacted to the statement of Sahrawi-Moroccan singer Saida Chalaf, welcoming France’s support for Sahrawi-Moroccan identity.
In a press release, the environmentalist mayor argued that “the agreement between the municipality and the Moroccan Embassy in the framework of the African Station was terminated due to the non-compliance of the participating countries with their commitments of neutrality”.
“Africa Station has no place in international politics. The city remains completely neutral on the issue of Western Sahara and rejects any attempt to exploit its position.”
This explanation has been condemned by the Consulate General of the Kingdom in Villemomble. The diplomatic representative condemned this “isolated approach” in a press release issued on Sunday, August 4. The same source asked whether the “unilateral and arbitrary termination” of the contract signed by both parties on July 16 “raises serious questions about the mayor’s motives and compliance with his commitments”.
“The opinions spontaneously expressed by Ms. Saida Chalav constitute neither the politicization of the Olympic Games nor an obstacle to the commitment to neutrality. Unfortunately, the mayor’s response introduces an inappropriate political dimension,” criticized the Kingdom’s Consulate General in Villemomble.
The decision of Mohamed Gnabaly deprives the Moroccan community in Paris of attending concerts organized by Moroccan singers as part of the 2024 Olympic Games in the Moroccan stand at the African station.
As a reminder, the Communist Party, the European Ecology Party, the Green Party and the Socialist Party Rebuke French President Emmanuel Macron supports Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
