Kamarudin said the defection resolved the internal dispute and would not affect the National Alliance’s support rate in the next by-election.

(FMT) – Kelantan Bersatu chairman Kamarudin Noor said the defection of Bersatu members to Umno had resolved internal issues in Bersatu’s Gua Musang unit.

Kamarudin said reports that 480 Bersatu members had joined Umno were exaggerated. He said only a few members had left the party, including former Bersatu Gua Musang deputy chairman Che Ariffin Hussin.

“There were complaints that Che Ariffin and his associates were in collusion with Gua Musang MP Azizi Abu Naim, who was expelled from Bersatu. They are awaiting disciplinary action.”

“Their decision to join Umno has resolved the problems within Bersatu. It is better for them to switch parties instead of continuing to create chaos,” Kamarudin told FMT.

He said the Bersatu Gua Musang committee had been suspended for several months and an interim committee had been set up, led by Paloh assemblyman Shaari Mat Hussain.

He also said these defections would not affect Perikatan Nasional’s support in the Najiri by-election as most of those joining Umno were not Najiri voters.

Earlier today, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that applications for membership of the party had been received from 480 Bersatu members from the Nigiri state constituency and welcomed them to join the party.

Xie Arifin said all 12 Bersatu branches in Nigiri had ceased activities following the large number of people leaving.

After Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional candidates submitted their papers to contest the Nigiri by-election on August 17, Bersatu announced a mass exodus of candidates.

The Barisan Nasional candidate is Gua Musang Umno Youth chief Azmahwi Fikri Abdul Ghani, while the Perikatan Nasional candidate is Rizwadi Ismail, who recently joined Bersatu from PAS.
