Health alert! Study shows drinking water from plastic bottles may cause microplastics to enter the blood and raise blood pressure

“We observed a significant trend. The results show for the first time that reducing plastic use may lead to lower blood pressure, possibly due to a reduction in the volume of plastic particles in the blood.

“The changes in blood pressure we observed suggest that reducing the intake of plastic particles could reduce cardiovascular risk.”

Research shows that microplastics – tiny fragments created by plastic degradation triggered by UV radiation or from bottle impacts – are everywhere.

Microplastics have been found in saliva, heart tissue, liver, kidneys and placenta. Multiple studies have found high concentrations of microplastics in water from plastic bottles.

For the new study, reported in the journal Microplastics, researchers had eight men and women get their daily fluid intake from tap water and told them not to drink beverages in plastic or glass bottles.

Blood pressure measurements were taken at the beginning of the study and several times during the study. Results showed that diastolic blood pressure (the pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting between beats) dropped significantly after two weeks.

“Based on our findings, which showed that blood pressure decreased with reduced plastic consumption, we speculated that plastic particles in the blood may contribute to the increased blood pressure,” the researchers said.
