Did you know that 80% of the waste generated in the metropolitan area can be recycled? The seven municipalities that make up the Cochabamba region are implementing a project that aims to consolidate this goal.
Of the 100% of waste generated in Sipe, Sipe, Vinto, Quillacollo, Tiquipaya, Colcapirhua, Cercado and Sacaba, at least half is organic waste, so it can be turned into fertilizer. 30% is recyclable waste, such as paper, cardboard, plastic and bottles. Only 20% is not used.
This plan is ideal and the government’s goal. In order for it to work, municipalities must apply what is known as a new integrated system of solid waste disposal.
To do this, the Kanata metropolitan area must sort its solid waste at source, as explained by the government’s Secretary of Planning and Strategic Development, Guillermo Bazoberry, in an interview with the TV program “Unir, Trabajo y Crecer”.
He noted that “through source separation, 80% of waste is utilized through operators responsible for proper management”.
According to the Secretariat of Planning and Strategic Development, the seven cities generate a total of nearly 1,000 tons of solid waste every day. If managed properly, 800 tons will usher in new opportunities.

To this end, the government recently issued an open invitation to operators of the Integrated Management System and Solid Waste Treatment Project in the Cochabamba-Canata Metropolitan Area to submit expressions of interest.
The document has been published on the government website so that interested parties can submit proposals to participate as system operators in the form of free administrative concessions for collection, selection, transportation and transformation.
He added that in addition to the final exposure treatment, the solicitation also proposed four batches: organic waste treatment, recyclable waste recycling, special waste recycling, and construction waste treatment.
