NZME newsroom staff will be called to a meeting next week to discuss the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
The media publisher has come under fire for admitting it uses artificial intelligence to write editorials published in the Weekend Herald and other publications, with one media commentator saying it “can only damage trust”.
RNZ Mediawatch revealed on Wednesday evening that NZME has used artificial intelligence Writing Editorials “Who should the All Blacks pick as centre forward?” The article first appeared in the Weekend Herald on July 20, along with another article about MMA professional Israel Adesanya.
NZME standard Does not enforce disclosure, but does say that stories should be attributed to the “author and/or creator/provider of the material” as per the company’s rules Code of Ethics.
NZME editor-in-chief Murray Kirkness said any content using artificial intelligence would be subject to review, editing and journalistic oversight.
But he said that in this particular case, more rigorous journalism would have been beneficial.
Kirkness said in an email to newsroom staff on Thursday that he was keen to convene a meeting to discuss the use of artificial intelligence now and in the future.
“As always, trust and credibility are of paramount importance to us and we will be discussing this as well.”
“Next week’s meeting will provide an opportunity for us to further discuss the use of AI and the standards that need to be maintained when using it.”
RNZ understands the meeting will take place on Wednesday.
