Turkey has blocked Instagram’s website for a second day, an AFP reporter confirmed on Saturday morning, after Turkey’s Information and Communications Technologies Authority announced the decision on its website, with senior Turkish officials accusing the US platform of censoring publications. The authority’s decision noted that the step was related to a system that allows the banning of “criminal content”, but did not provide further details. “Our country has values and sensitivities. Despite our warnings, they did not take into account criminal content. We banned access to the site. The ban will be lifted when they respect our laws,” Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Olaloglu said on Friday.
Turkish Presidential Communications Minister Fakhruddin Altun strongly criticized the platform on Wednesday, stressing that it blocked people from posting condolences for Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was buried on Friday. He was assassinated in a strike in Tehran on Wednesday. “This is a clear attempt at censorship,” Altun wrote on X. In addition to the Ankara Bar Association, two opposition parties, the Republican People’s Party (Social Democratic Party) and the Good Party (Nationalist), took legal action on Friday evening to lift the ban on access to the site.
