Lara Azzopardi, known for her roles in local productions such as Iċ-Ċaqqufa and Gizelle, is using her platform to highlight the urgent need for organ donors in Malta.
In a short video for Heart Transplant Day, Azzopardi shared her own experience with a heart transplant. She said a friend of hers had received a heart transplant just a few months ago when he was just 16 years old and knew he needed one. She encouraged the public to spread the word and register to become an organ donor.
She was joined by some of the country’s most prominent figures in the campaign. The Prime Minister’s wife, Lydia Abela, lent her voice to the campaign, calling on viewers to become organ donors themselves, noting that the more organ donors there are, the more people will receive life-changing organ transplants.
Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said donating an organ was one of the best donations a person could make, noting that anyone could choose to donate their organs so that someone else could have a better life.
Health Minister Jo-Etienne Abela also supported the campaign, saying that while we associate death with tragedy, organ donation can make the death of one person a better life for others.
Likewise, Shadow Health Secretary Adrian Delia called on everyone over the age of 16 to agree to donate their organs, reminding that it costs nothing to donors but each donor could save up to eight lives.
Public Health Director Charmaine Gauci reminded the public that every day many people are waiting for an organ transplant. She explained that everyone has the opportunity to change their life through organ donation, and said every donation provides a second chance for someone in need.
