P-au-P, August 2, 2024 (AlterPresse) – The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (Binuh) has noted a significant increase in cases of sexual violence against women and girls in several communities in the capital and in camps for displaced persons, according to a recent report (late July 2024) seen by the online agency AlterPresse, Port-au-Prince.
He noted that sexual violence has increased significantly in areas controlled by armed groups and lacking state services.
Citing local sources, Le Binuh reported a very worrying increase in rapes in Grecier (about 30 km south of Port-au-Prince) and Carrefour (15 km south of Port-au-Prince) and Cité Soleil (to the north), Croix des-Bouquets and Delmas (to the northeast) as well as Port-au-Prince.
According to testimonies from service providers, some areas receive 40 rape victims per day.
Binuh reported the case of a girl less than three years old, the youngest among the rape victims.
At the end of June 2024, a 13-year-old girl was shot twice in the head by members of the Simon Pelé gang from Cité Soleil (North), with whom she had an abusive relationship, she expressed regret.
