TE HUPO’AO, Tahiti (AP) — The final preliminary rounds of the Olympic surfing competition were postponed until Sunday afternoon in Tahiti because of unfavorable conditions on small waves, with Monday likely to be the final day of competition.
Throughout the competition, forecasters have been concentrating on finding the best waves for the final day of the surf test, which must be concluded by Monday.
The wave forecast is the biggest factor in determining when the Olympic surfing competition will be held, followed by the angle and size of the waves. With only four days in the 10-day window for the competition, it is important to choose the best date.
While Teahupo’o is known for its big, heavy barrel waves, conditions during the Olympic Games ranged from iconic big to disappointing, causing delays during the competition window.
Technical delegates are expected to make a decision on the next possible date in Tahiti later on Sunday afternoon.
It was the second day in a row that the competition was postponed after the defending Olympic women’s surfing champion, American Clarissa Moore, lost in the quarterfinals. On Thursday, the waves were steady but there were fewer big barrels than were seen earlier in the week.
The second day of events will determine which athletes will receive medals. In the quarterfinals, two semifinalists from each heat will compete to advance to the gold medal heats. The losers of the two semifinal series will compete for the bronze medal.
