San Salvador – The El Salvadoran National Navy intercepted a boat carrying three Ecuadorians on the high seas with about a ton of cocaine worth about $25 million, El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukeleben reported on Tuesday.
“Eleven days after another large drug seizure, our national navy intercepted another vessel 805 nautical miles (1,491 kilometers) southwest of Bocana El Cordoncillo in Estero de Jaltepeque,” Bukele said at X.
The Yaltepec River Estuary is a saltwater eye located between the departments of La Paz and San Vicente, with a total length of 28 kilometers.
Bukele noted that “there were three Ecuadorian crew members on board” and that “it was estimated that there was about one ton of cocaine on board, worth about $25 million.”
On May 24, the Salvadoran National Navy intercepted a shipment of 1.4 tons of cocaine 1,633 kilometers from the coast, which the Salvadoran authorities estimated to be worth $35 million.
According to Bukele, “a drug dealer opened fire on our sailors and died after being neutralized in lawful defense.”
Recently, a court in El Salvador sentenced six Mexican citizens to ten years in prison each for drug trafficking after they were detained in Pacific waters with $20 million worth of drugs.
Drug trafficking in Central America and the Caribbean is exacerbating already high levels of violence in the region as criminal groups fight among themselves, according to a report from the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).
El Salvador was included on a list of countries with the highest levels of drug production and transit published by the U.S. government last year, along with Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.
The US President sends this list to Congress every year to determine the budget specifically used to combat drug trafficking. JS
