Human rights activists report that 39-year-old Russian pianist and peace activist Pavel Kushnir has died in a prisoner-of-war camp in Far East Siberia.
According to the Russian civil rights portal OVD-Info, Kushnir died of hunger strike. In Germany, pianist Olga Shkligunova, who had known Kushnir for a long time, confirmed Kushnir’s death.
Kusnil, who was arrested in May and charged with extremism, has made no secret of his opposition to the invasion of Ukraine, has written a book opposing the war and is behind a small YouTube channel that publishes anti-fascist posts.
In recent months, OVD-Info has registered nearly 1,000 court cases against Russian anti-war activists. About 300 people have been detained, held in prisoner-of-war camps or under guard in hospitals.
Ilya Yashin, who was released in this week’s prisoner swap, said he did not really want to leave Russia and that there were several other seriously ill political prisoners whose care would have been more urgent.
