The President of the National Human Rights Commission, Emmanuel Jouf, stressed the importance of respecting the peace agreement and conducting political activities in a way that promotes harmony and mutual respect during a training session on hate speech for representatives of the Independent Electoral Commission at the Bakadaji Hotel.
Mr. Joffe, who also chairs the Inter-Party Commission (IPC) and Civil Society Organisations, also highlighted the critical role played by the IEC, IPC, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders in strengthening democracy and fostering a peaceful and harmonious environment.
He urged political leaders to tone down their rhetoric as the 2026 presidential election approaches and reminded them of their commitment to the Peace Agreement.
“With the 2026 presidential election approaching, the NHRC also wishes to remind all political leaders, their parties and politicians of the peace agreement they signed and to tone down their rhetoric, conduct affairs in a peaceful manner and desist from divisive statements that could fan the flames of disunity and hatred,” Chairman Jove said.
He further encouraged participants to actively participate and learn from each other, stressing that their collective efforts can have a significant impact on promoting a culture of respect, dignity and understanding. “By working together, we can promote a culture of respect, dignity and mutual understanding and have a significant impact,” he said. “I encourage you to actively participate, share your insights, learn from each other, and work together to achieve common goals.”
Finally, Chairman Joof highlighted the long-term benefits of their efforts in preventing hate speech, calling it a critical step towards creating a future where everyone is valued and respected. “By equipping ourselves with the knowledge and skills to prevent hate speech, we are taking a critical step towards creating a future where everyone is valued and respected,” he said.
Samba Balde, co-chair of the cross-party committee, expressed deep concern over the increasing hate speech on social media and stressed its adverse impact on the country’s peace and stability.
He urged the Gambian people to maintain peace and stability in the country and called on all political parties to abide by their public commitments and the IPC code of conduct.
Furthermore, Balde implored the media to exercise their power responsibly and provide balanced coverage of the issue of hate speech.
