American technology companiesPerceptionManufacture a dental robot that boasts fully automatic control by artificial intelligence (AI) to complete the world’sFirst robotic dental surgeryThe company has raised a total of US$30 million (approximately HK$234 million), but the robot has not been certified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so it may take several years for the public to benefit from it.

Detecting tooth decay with an accuracy rate of 90%
Patients do not need to take X-rays before the consultation. The dentist first uses a handheld 3D volume scanner and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to build a detailed 3D model of the mouth, including teeth, gums, and even the internal nerves. The accuracy rate of detecting tooth decay is about 90%.

Taking the installation of artificial braces as an example, dentists usually perform two separate processes, such as grinding teeth for nearly two hours, making dental molds, and then putting on temporary braces; when the custom-made permanent braces are completed, they go back to the dentist for bonding. However, the robot dentist can complete the grinding in 15 minutes, which is 7 times faster than human dentists, and can also bond permanent braces immediately.
