The picturesque Dutch Caribbean island nation of Curaçao has officially joined the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as its newest associate member. The milestone was announced at the opening of the CARICOM Heads of Government Summit in Grenada. Curaçao’s accession expands the influence of CARICOM and strengthens economic integration and cooperation among Caribbean countries, especially small island developing States. CARICOM is committed to promoting regional cooperation and welcomes Curaçao’s accession as Caribbean leaders gather to discuss pressing issues, with climate change at the top of the list. Curaçao’s accession is expected to bring new opportunities for trade, cultural exchange and collective problem-solving among member countries. As the Caribbean region faces growing environmental challenges, Curaçao’s accession will help develop a stronger regional strategy to address climate change and other issues of common concern.
