Grace Tam discovers unexpected health diagnosis after years of sufferingThe activist and former Australian of the Year said she ignored her symptoms, including pelvic pain and vomiting, for years but was finally diagnosed Endometriosis.
Grace, an activist and writer for victims of sexual assault, is one of the women and girls living with a debilitating illness that can cause enormous suffering if not detected early. One in seven women suffer from the disease.
She announced the news on Instagram, revealing that she recently underwent surgery to remove endometriosis from her bowel, pelvic wall and sacroiliac ligaments.
Specifically, Grace has been around for many years. She denied and downplayed her symptoms as a result of “persistent sexual abuse” when she was 15.But it wasn’t until recently that she discovered what exactly was causing her pain.
– It’s easy to fall into the trap of internalizing trauma to our detriment. I have always believed that ongoing sexual abuse caused my chronic pelvic pain. I’ve learned to separate myself from most of it. I’ve wiped out severe bouts of illness with food poisoning.
– After testing negative for Crohn’s, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease, my cousin Morgan encouraged me Went to see a gynecologist for the first time in over 10 years.
She underwent surgery on May 24 after gynaecologists suspected she had endometriosis.
– The surgery went well and as I write this I can’t help but feel so grateful for where I am.even though removal cannot cure the disease – she said she hopes to raise awareness of endometriosis and wrote “Yahoo“.
