The president of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), Elvis Amoroso, published this Friday the second communiqué of the results of last Sunday’s presidential election, confirming the victory of President Nicolas Maduro.
After transmitting 96.87% of the minutes, electoral officials explained that Maduro received 6 million 408 thousand 844 votes, for 51.95% of the votes; while his closest opponent, Edmundo González, received 5 million 326 thousand 104, for 43.18%.
The remaining eight candidates received a combined 4.86 percent of the vote, according to the election agency.
The official also noted that, according to the minutes processed so far, the participation of Venezuelans in these elections was 59.97%; that is, 12 million, 386,669 people out of more than 21 million authorized to vote.
The Chairman of the National Election Commission stated that 12 million, 335,000, 884 votes had been cast, with 99.59 percent of the votes valid and 50,000, 785 votes invalid.
In his speech, Elvis Amoroso reiterated complaints about “massive computer attacks” from around the world that have targeted the technical infrastructure of Venezuela’s national electoral department and major telecommunications companies, causing “delays in the transmission of information” and the process of publishing minutes and results.
He also condemned a “terrorist attack” that included “burning down of regional election offices, voting centres and emergency transport centres”.
Elvis Amoroso thanked the Venezuelan people on behalf of the electoral country for their “profound demonstration of democratic mission” in the presidential election.
Thanks also to the members of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB), who were part of the Republican Plan, the military deployment carried out in the elections; as well as to the international observers and companions.
