ANKARA (Reuters) – Turkey has blocked access to social media platform Instagram, the country’s information technology regulator said on Friday, without giving the reason or duration of the ban, while the platform’s mobile app will also be inaccessible.

The move follows comments on Wednesday by Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun criticizing the platform’s decision to block posts expressing condolences over the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a key figure in the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

“This is pure censorship,” Altun, the communications director for the Turkish presidency, said on X, adding that Instagram had not indicated that its actions violated any policies.

Meta Platforms Inc, Instagram’s parent company, has not yet commented on the ban or Altun’s remarks.

Turkey’s Information Technology and Communications Authority (BTK) published the August 2 decision on its website.
