KOROR – The Department of Agriculture will resume purchasing taro from local farmers after the taro flour processing plant resumes full operations.
The factory stopped production on March 5 due to a power failure, and taro purchases were drastically reduced from about 1,000 pounds per week to 200 pounds. The bureau sold the purchased taro to local retailers while the factory was under repair.
The agency has completed electrical upgrades, including installing individual surge protectors and circuit breakers, and conducting electrical testing.
“The successful resolution of the food processing center’s electrical issues underscores our commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency,” Acting Director Kashgar Lungulbai said in a statement. “We look forward to the positive impact this will have on the community.”
The bureau said taro flour will soon be available in retail stores.
“We are especially grateful for the community’s patience and support during this time,” the agency said. “This will enhance food security while also providing valuable products to our local markets.”
