MOGADISHU (HOL) – Hundreds of people protested in Mogadishu after Friday prayers to condemn the killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh.

The demonstration was led by prominent religious figures, who held Palestinian flags and portraits of the late Haniyeh and chanted in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Scholar Sheikh Abdihayi, who attended the rally, called Haniyeh a martyr and prayed for the suffering of the Palestinian Muslim community.

Haniyeh, 62, was assassinated in Tehran early Wednesday morning in what Palestinian groups called a “perfidious Zionist attack on his residence.” Israel has not confirmed or denied its involvement in the assassination. Haniyeh was in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new president.

Somalia condemned the assassination, with the Foreign Ministry saying it violated international law and expressing deep concern about escalating violence in the region.

Demonstrations against Haniyeh’s killing broke out in the occupied West Bank, Lebanon, Iran and other countries, with world leaders condemning the assassination.
