Next month, the Gasong National Service Corps will welcome its first batch of 3,678 youths who will begin a rigorous three-month training programme.
This historic move marks the beginning of a new chapter in national service for Bhutanese youth.
The training will be conducted at four Gyalsong colleges, namely Pematang Gyalsong College in Sandru Dzongkar, Gyapo Zin Gyalsong College in Mongar, Jangcholing Gyalsong College in Samtse and Khotokkha Gyalsong College in Wangdue.
According to a directive from Gyalsung headquarters, all soldiers will receive their report dates via email and can also be viewed on the Gyalsung website. “The report dates for soldiers in the same academy may vary to allow adequate time for effective pre-training management and transportation,” the directive stated.
The allocation of the first two batches was done through a computer system.
The first batch of students consisted of 2,108 people, including 600 each from Baimatang, Hotoka, and Jiangcuolin Jiasong Colleges, and 308 from Jiabozhe Jiasong College; the second batch of students consisted of 1,570 people, including 446 each from Baimatang, Hotoka, and Jiangcuolin Jiasong Colleges, and 232 from Jiabozhe Jiasong College.
The first batch of training will start on September 5, 2024 and end on December 3, 2024; the second batch of training will start on December 16 and end on March 15, 2025.
Second batch of training: The first batch of training started on April 1 and ended on June 30; the second batch of training started on August 1 and ended on October 30.
The three-month training programme for the classes of 2024 and 2025 includes basic military training, national education lectures and life skills courses. The Royal Bhutan Armed Forces will conduct military training, while the Royal Institute of Governance and Strategic Studies will provide leadership courses.
Chung Dratshang will offer Choeshey Larim courses, and experts will teach Driglam Namzha, Bhutanese history and national security courses.
National Service aims to equip Bhutanese youth with the necessary knowledge, skills and values to realize their potential in a rapidly changing world. The programme also aims to foster a sense of volunteerism and selfless service, preparing participants to safeguard national unity, peace, security and sovereignty.
Each Gyalsung academy is equipped with a health department staffed by medical staff. During the first four weeks, no visitors are allowed. “After this, they can receive pre-approved guests on Sundays, provided they have prior permission from the training officer or company commander,” the Gyalsung headquarters said.
According to the national budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year, N3.4970606 billion has been allocated. Of the total budget, N3.617051 billion from the capital budget is for BMT, N3.771 billion for community safety skills, N3.219 billion for family safety skills, N3.1676128 billion for food safety skills and N3.100734 billion for ICT skills.
On December 17, 2019, the King of Bhutan announced the launch of Gyalsung (Bhutan National Service) in a royal speech marking the 112th National Day of Bhutan. Gyalsung aims to empower Bhutanese youth to participate in nation-building and enhance the country’s security, peace, unity, harmony and sovereignty.
National service is a fundamental obligation of all Bhutanese citizens and is enshrined in Article 8.1 of the Constitution. The Gyaltsen Law of the Kingdom of Bhutan was enacted by Parliament on 11 November 2022.
