Alarcón rules out the possibility that the presidential election should be re-run: “We just have to respect the results”

Benigno Alarcón, director of the Center for Political and Government Studies, ruled out that a repeat of the electoral process would be a solution to the conflict that emerged after the July 28 presidential election.

“I don’t think it’s necessary to repeat the elections because they have already taken place and both the government and the opposition had to agree to it. All you have to do is respect the results of the choices made and if in doubt, verify the results. I would rule out a repeat,” he declared at a CIAP press conference.

Alarcón recalled that at a pre-election forum held at the Center for Political and Government Studies, they proposed that two scenarios would emerge after the elections, one of which was the conflict that Venezuelans are seeing now.

“We said that two scenarios could happen: either the process and the outcome are recognized and negotiated, or it is unknown and we are in conflict. What we are seeing today, and no one doubts that this is the second scenario, the Pandora’s box is not recognized and opened, from which we do not know what will emerge, but we do know that this Pandora’s box is closed by a negotiation or understanding; or it is closed by force.

“We all want it to be closed because there is a consensus to verify the results and to accept them voluntarily, otherwise it will be very difficult. “This country wants to live in peace, but there can be no peace without respecting the sovereignty of the people expressed on July 28.”
