Construction of Schiermonnikoog gas extraction rig halted again after State Council ruling

The legal dispute surrounding the construction of a gas extraction rig near Schiermonnikoog has taken a new turn. Last week it looked like One-Dyas would be able to resume construction of the project by installing the rig, but the Council of State granted the required permission anyway. Temporary inactivationThis took place in an emergency ruling on Tuesday. The license has not yet been definitively cancelled: a decision on the matter is likely to come next week, when the matter will be on the agenda again.

Last week, One-Dyas said the objections from the Hague court had been resolved, but the permit was still granted. This means construction can resume until opponents of the project go before the Council of State. The Supreme Administrative Court temporarily halted the resumption of construction because there was “no opportunity” to hear all parties at a hearing.

One-Dyas received a permit for the project in the summer of 2022, but the installation of the platform was abruptly halted last April. Subsequently, the Hague Court cancelled part of the permit for the gas project on the orders of various environmental groups. They were concerned about the amount of nitrogen released during the construction of the drilling platform. There were also concerns about the impact of underwater noise on animals in the area. In addition, environmental interest groups believe that the establishment of new fossil fuel projects is undesirable from a climate point of view.
