Bloomberg cited sources as saying that Apple is increasing its investment in Tencent (00700) and ByteDance to close a loophole in their apps that developers use to redirect users to external payment systems, skirting Apple’s usual 30% commission.

Sources said Apple warned Tencent in May that it might reject important WeChat updates unless Tencent removed links used by mini-game developers to accept payments outside the Apps store. A few months later, Apple asked Tencent to disable a key in-game messaging feature that also directed users away from the Apps store. Tencent has not yet agreed to this request.

Another source said Apple told ByteDance in June that it would not accept new updates for TikTok unless ByteDance also plugged similar payment loopholes.
