This follows comments on Wednesday by Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun, who criticised the platform’s decision to block “sympathy posts” over the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a key official with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
“This is pure censorship,” Artur, the Turkish presidency’s communications director, told X, adding that Instagram did not point out any policy violations in its actions.
Meta Platforms, Instagram’s parent company, did not immediately comment on the ban or Altun’s remarks.
Turkey’s Information Technology and Communications Authority (BTC) announced the decision on its website, saying “instagram.com has been blocked as a result of the decision dated August 2, 2024,” but did not provide further details.
Instagram has more than 50 million users in Türkiye.
