In the first quarter of 2024, the Netherlands imported cocoa worth 1.3 billion euros. This is 0.6 billion euros more than in the first quarter of 2023. The volume of cocoa imported increased by 32%, and the price of cocoa also increased. In the first quarter of 2024, the average price of cocoa and cocoa products was 40% higher than in the same period last year. In Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, the two main sources of cocoa imports, the harvests were worse than usual due to heavy rains. This led to more diseases in crops such as cocoa trees. Imports to both countries increased in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the first quarter of 2023, but the increase was less than the total imports.

Most cocoa is imported from Côte d’Ivoire, but exports from other countries are also increasing
In the first quarter of 2024, 41% of cocoa imports by value came from Côte d’Ivoire. Cameroon came in second with 17% of total imports, and Ghana was third with an 11% share. Although the value of cocoa imports from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana (two countries with problematic cocoa harvests) increased by 40% and 35% respectively, the share of cocoa imports from these two countries actually decreased. At the same time, the shares of Nigeria, Ecuador and Peru increased. Even so, Côte d’Ivoire remains by far the most important cocoa supplier to the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is the largest cocoa importer in the EU
Overall, EU countries imported €4.5 billion worth of cocoa in the first quarter of 2024. The Netherlands imported more cocoa than any other EU country, accounting for 30% of the total EU cocoa imports. In the first quarter of 2023, this share was 25%. Germany’s share of EU cocoa imports was 22%, while Belgium’s was 14%. Côte d’Ivoire was the main source of cocoa for the EU in the first quarter of 2024, as was the Netherlands. Interestingly, the Netherlands is the second largest supplier of cocoa to other EU countries, after Côte d’Ivoire. These exports mainly involve processed cocoa products. After being processed, these products are exported to other EU countries in the EU. Almost all of the cocoa imported by the Netherlands is purchased for use by companies located in the Netherlands. Only 5% of the cocoa (by value) is in transit.
