The particular situation of the commune of Mont-Dore was discussed in recent hours during a meeting with Marie Guevenoux, the ministerial delegate in charge of overseas territories. The situation in Mont-Dore, and in particular on the Saint-Louis road, was the focus of discussion between the town’s mayor, Eddy Lecourieux, and the resigning minister, Marie Gwenoux, on the first day of their visit. “It is true that the state does not necessarily feel that things are going well when we talk about this particular area. In any case, she assured that gendarmerie and police resources will remain in the territory and that they will find a solution to the situation.”
Residents of southern Mont-Dore also went to the High Commission to demand that the road to St. Louis be opened and protected. “Access is now critical. assures Florent Perrin of the Citoyen Mondorien association. This morning we asked that we be given priority as part of the reconstruction of New Caledonia, because now everyone recognizes that we cannot keep this road safe.”
Another consequence of blocking the road was that 200 students from the high school and 130 students from Burroughs College, who live in southern Mont-Dore, were penalized.
City Hall is working with education stakeholders to find solutions. Among them: dedicated shuttles for staff and students. “Of course, we are also thinking a lot about the question of educational continuity and the Mont-Dore Town Hall could intervene by providing equipment so that these videoconferences can take place in the best conditions”” explains Valérie Bolo, deputy mayor in charge of education.
