The behavior of the Macedonian airport officials violates any international convention, according to which heads of state are protected by diplomatic privileges and immunities when traveling. This is the reaction of Bekim Kupina, media advisor to Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, after today’s incident at Skopje Airport.
“Contrary to international practice and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the security guard at the Skopje airport tried to take away the president’s private phone. She would not allow such a thing to happen, as it would be a serious violation. Despite the fact that the presidential team explained the rules to the airport official, he tried to push the president with his body, forcing the Kosovo police to react. Kupina added that airport staff also took Osmani’s bag in violation of regulations.
“The Macedonian side violated these rules and took the president’s wallet. The presidential team allowed it, despite the violation of the rules, so that the president could enter the airport, especially the VIP room, which was reserved with a note from our embassy, as is customary for visits by heads of state. But for security reasons, it is not allowed to hand over a personal mobile phone in any way. The arrogance and violence of the officials at Skopje Airport are unprecedented and have never happened before during any of the president’s trips anywhere in the world.”
Osmani briefed the President of the General Assembly, Afrin Gash, and thanked him for his assistance.
Vjosa Osmani’s office said that after the president boarded the plane, Skopje Airport did not allow the commercial aircraft to fly to Ljubljana for more than an hour on the grounds that the Slovenian government did not allow it because the airport there was not ready for landing.
However, it was added in the response that Osmani’s office contacted the Slovenian side and they were told that this was not true and the plane would have landed at the scheduled time.
“The president considers any offensive and irregular behavior by high-ranking state officials in violation of international conventions as an attack on the Kosovo state itself. The Republic of Kosovo has never in its history treated the president, prime minister or minister of North Macedonia or any other country in this way and will never allow it to happen.”
Tonight, the Ministry of Interior informed that at around 10:00 this morning at the Skopje International Airport, the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, was undergoing border control when she was asked to leave her mobile phone behind to pass through the check. After the scanner, security personnel took the TAV employee away so that she could pass without scanning her mobile phone and hand luggage. Although the employee was pulled away, the luggage was returned and passed through the scanner.
