From Stockholm to Seoul, Rome to Paris, every Summer Olympics since 1912 has included women’s swimming, and among the hundreds of competitors from dozens of countries during that period, no one has won more medals than Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky of Bethesda, Maryland.
On Thursday night, she won the third leg of the U.S. 4×200-meter freestyle relay, which beat four other teams besides Australia to win 13 medals in four Olympics. No American Olympian has won more in any sport.
It was Ledecky’s fourth silver, along with eight golds and a bronze, and her third medal of this Olympics. She has one more event left in Paris, the 800-meter freestyle. It’s a hunch, but considering Ledecky has won no less than 800-meter gold in each of the past three Olympics, her total could be improved.
