Government spokesman Fahmi Fazil said the rally was open to the public and “all political parties” to express support for Palestine.
(FMT) – Government spokesman Fahmi Fazil said the cabinet had agreed to hold a cross-party rally this Sunday in solidarity with Palestine.
He told a press conference that the rally will be held at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, at 8pm this Sunday.
Fahmy, who is also communications minister, said the public and “all parties” were invited to the rally, adding that the event would provide a platform for everyone to express support for Palestine.
“We hope this will send a clear signal to the international community that the Malaysian people’s stance on the plight of the Palestinians has not changed. We will continue to stand with the Palestinian people,” he said.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other government leaders are also expected to attend, he added.
Yesterday, Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike in Tehran, Iran, while attending the inauguration of the country’s new president.
Malaysian politicians from across the political spectrum expressed outrage at Ismail’s death, with Islamist party chief Abdul Hadi Awang denouncing “cowardly Israel” and Anwar paying tribute to the late Hamas leader as a “dear friend and courageous champion of the people”.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said the government was seeking clarification from Meta on why posts from Anwar’s official Facebook and Instagram accounts, including his tribute to Haniyeh, were deleted.
“At this point, there are a few possibilities: it could have been automatically removed by Meta, or it could have been removed due to a public complaint.”
Yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Office said Mehta had deleted a post on the prime minister’s Facebook page about Anwar’s meeting with Haniyeh in Qatar two months ago.
Earlier today, FMT’s checks revealed that the English versions of Anwar’s posts on Facebook and Instagram condemning Haniyeh’s assassination had also been deleted by Meta.
In response, Anwar strongly condemned Meta’s removal of the tribute to the late Hamas leader, saying it was disrespectful and insulting to the Palestinian people’s struggle.
