Two other Sri Lankan fast bowlers are out of the One-Day International against India, Matheesha Pathirana due to shoulder injury and Dilshan Madushanka due to hamstring injury.
Sri Lanka was also missing Dushmantha Chameera, who was absent due to illness, and Nuwan Tushara, who had a fractured thumb. Both players also missed the T20I matches.
Sri Lanka has included uncapped right-hander Mohammad Shiraz in the squad, manager Mahinda Harangoda confirmed to ESPNcricinfo. He said the team will also announce the inclusion of another bowler later on Thursday. Binura Fernando – despite not playing an ODI since mid-2021 – will not be an option as he is still recovering from the flu.
“Matisha’s shoulder was injured and since he had the same problem during the World Cup last year, they decided not to take the risk,” Harangoda said. Patirana got injured in the third T20I at Pallekele and left the field soon after, having not bowled a single ball in that match.
Harangoda said that Madhushankar had injured his hamstring during training. He played only one match.
Both Patilana and Madhushankar are likely to start in the first ODI against India on Friday. Sri Lanka has lost its last 10 matches against India.
