Today, a Home Office working group began preparing changes to the Firearms Act and Firearms Regulations to bring them into line with the EU Weapons Directive.
Among other things, changes are planned to who can get licenses to buy and own weapons.
Under the Weapons Directive, a licence can only be issued to someone who has an acceptable basis for doing so and who does not pose a danger to themselves, others or public order.
If the person has been convicted of an intentional violent crime, a license should not be issued. At least the regulations regarding the approval and cancellation of gun collectors and gun dealers are expected to be clarified.

Regulations on the marking of weapons and their parts are also being clarified. With the help of marking, the traceability of weapons can be improved.
Deactivated weapons will also come under the ambit of the Firearms Act. Under EU regulations, they are still weapons even if you can’t shoot them.
Necessary changes to the Firearms Act and Firearms Regulations will be prepared next year.
