The Malta Journalists Association has welcomed a legal notice implementing the European Directive on Strategic Cases of Objection to Public Participation (SLAPP) but said it would study it in more detail.
“The IĠM considers that this order is a step forward in addressing the gaps that have existed until now. However, the IĠM will examine this order in more detail in order to be able to make recommendations for improving the protection of journalists and those involved in public engagement,” the IĠM said.

Indian media noted with disappointment that last year the government promised to publish a white paper to solicit public opinion on media sector reforms proposed by an expert committee, but nine months later this promise has not been fulfilled.
“IĠM reiterates that anti-SLAPP measures are only part of a broader reform framework aimed at protecting journalists and those involved in public participation.”
“We need constitutional reform, changes to defamation laws and criminal laws, etc., to create an environment where journalists can work more confidently.
“The Freedom of Information Act also needs to be amended so that it truly becomes a tool for greater transparency.” IĠM reiterated the need for the White Paper to be published as soon as possible.
