CNN cited a senior US government official as saying that the two sides have agreed on a prisoner exchange and the detainees should be handed over to US authorities soon. Bloomberg wrote on its website that people imprisoned in Russia on suspicion of espionage are already on their way out of the country.

Russia’s state news agency TASS said the White House, the U.S. State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency were involved in the swap talks.

Earlier on Thursday, Reuters reported that Russia and several Western countries were preparing the largest prisoner swap since the end of the Cold War.
