Haiti-France debt: Haiti officially joins CARICOM Reparations Commission

During the 47th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of CARICOM member States, Haiti announced to all leaders of the Caribbean Community that it had officially become a member of the CARICOM Reparations Commission, which will provide important support for the important work of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.
Haitian Prime Minister Dominique Dupuy said: “One of the highlights of our participation in this summit was certainly the announcement of Haiti’s membership of the CARICOM Reparations Commission. This decision was warmly welcomed by the Assembly and Haiti is now rightfully at the centre of this debate and this important work being carried out in the region.”
It is worth mentioning that the initiative follows a meeting last week between the Rector of the National University of Haiti (UEH), Professor Fritz Deshommes, and the Chancellor, Dominique Dupuy, to discuss the creation of a working group within the UEH to deal with the issue of “reparations and restitution related to slavery and independence debts of the 19th and 20th centuries.”
