Melvin Tjon Sie Fat, President of the Suriname Red Cross (SRK), and Rita Tjien Fooh, Director of the Suriname National Archives (NAS), recently documented the cooperation between the two institutions in an agreement on the transfer of old Surinamese archives to SRK. This preserves part of SRK’s history and heritage.
The first 108 Red Cross archive boxes, containing documents and information from 1995 to 2005, were moved to the NAS earlier this year, on 19 June. The transferred archives contain valuable documents that provide an in-depth look at the activities and development of the Suriname Red Cross during this period.
Tjon Sie Fat said he was proud of the partnership with NAS. “This transfer is an important step in the preservation and documentation of our heritage. The Red Cross hopes to add the period after 2005 in the foreseeable future. We look forward to the opportunity this development provides to keep the history of the Red Cross alive.”
According to SRK, the SRK Archives project is being carried out by Anne-Marie Guicherit and Carmen Towirjo.
