HARARE – President Mnangagwa has reappointed Simelishizwesibanda as deputy minister of higher education after he sacked her earlier this month for reprimanding and directing the immediate transfer of a non-Ndebele-speaking Early Childhood Development (ECD) teacher at a primary school in Matabeleland North.

Mnangagwa immediately dismissed the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) MPs from their posts without giving any reason.

At the time, Sibanda was fired for reprimanding a teacher who enrolled in an early childhood development course without knowing English.

According to government policy, primary schools should be taught by teachers who are familiar with the local language.

In a statement on Wednesday, Martin Rushwaya, principal secretary to the president and cabinet, said Sibanda had been reinstated after a “sincere apology”.

“His Excellency the President, Dr. Emmerson Dambuzo Mnangagwa, has decided to pardon MP Simelisizwe Sibanda following his plea, his deep apology and his promise not to commit similar crimes in the future.

“Accordingly, His Excellency the President, Dr Emmerson Dambuzo Mnangagwa, in accordance with the provisions of Section 104 (2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, appoints the Honourable Simelise Sizwe Sibanda MP as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Higher Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development.

“The appointment is effective immediately,” Rashwaya said.
