iciHaiti - Back to school: OCHA and its partners concerned

As the new school year in Haiti begins in September, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and its partners are concerned that continued insecurity will affect school attendance.

At least 919 schools were closed in the West and Artibonite departments, affecting approximately 156,000 students. In the West department, which includes Port-au-Prince, 39 schools were used as camps for internally displaced persons, while at least 20 schools were occupied by armed groups.

Last week, the United Nations Education in Emergencies and Crisis Fund, Education Cannot Wait, allocated $2.5 million to support school education efforts in Haiti, particularly in the West and Artibonite departments. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42856-haiti-education-us$25-million-emergency-response.html .

The United Nations continues to call on the international community to help resolve the ongoing crisis in Haiti. Seven months into the year, the $674 million humanitarian response plan is only 25% funded, with only $170 million received.
