When the shop that makes Dunedin’s biggest ice cream goes on sale, one of the first questions everyone asks is: “Will they still make extra-large multi-scoops?”

Freya Yin, new owner of Rob Roy Dairy, answered with a resounding “yes”.

To do otherwise would be tantamount to suicide, she said.

“I want to keep everything the way it is because (as) you can see, it works.

“It draws people in the door. The ice cream is big — big enough to make a panda happy.”

Ms Yin said she previously lived in Christchurch and worked at a Wendy’s ice cream shop there.

But when her son decided to study dental technology at Otago University this year, she moved to Dunedin with him.

When her good friend recently bought a shop in Oamaru, she decided to take it a step further and buy a shop of her own.

To keep up with the Jones family, she said, “I want one too” to keep herself busy.

The creamery, located on the corner of George and Albany streets, has been in business for more than 30 years, and 70 percent of the year, the majority of its customers are university students.

But former owner Liz Watson said its fame also attracted many families and tourists from overseas.

“Basically, it’s sugar. It attracts everyone.”

“I don’t feel guilty about it.

“Ironically, my dental students and dental staff are coming here for ice cream.”

She said the store typically sells about 500 ice cream cones a day.

However, in September 2015, the dairy sold 1,219 ice cream cones in one day, breaking its previous sales record of 900 cones.

After owning the store for nearly 17 years, she said she has “mixed emotions” about selling it.

The 64-year-old retired yesterday and said she hoped to have more free time and no longer have any connection with the shop.

“I feel like I’m always on standby.

“But I’m going to miss it — especially the social aspect of it.

“I had to develop my social life after retirement because I didn’t have much time for other things.

“I’m looking forward to having more free time.”
