Bernard Grech slams ‘weak’ PM as Labour defends itself against ‘lies’

National Party leader Bernard Grech has described Prime Minister Robert Abela as weak for failing to remove Edward Scicluna from the post of central bank governor.

In an interview with FLiving, Bernard Grech criticized Abela for allowing Scicluna to keep his astronomical salary, even though he had said days earlier that Scicluna should follow the example of Chris Fearne and Ronald Mizzi, Scicluna’s co-defendants in the Vitals case who, unlike Scicluna, resigned from public office after being indicted.

Grech stressed that it was unfair that despite Scicluna’s suspension, he remained in his original position and continued to receive a monthly salary of 11,500 euros.

Grech said Abela had proposed to the cabinet to remove Scicluna, but Abela lacked authority, resulting in only a few ministers supporting him.

The Nationalist leader reminded again that Abela could have obtained a unanimous parliamentary motion for Scicluna’s resignation if the government had accepted Grech’s request.

Labour defends itself against ‘lies and distortions’

Meanwhile, the Labour Party has responded to the fierce criticism that has followed Scicluna’s self-suspension.

The PT said Scicluna’s suspension was approved by the cabinet and that “any other version is nothing but lies and distortions by the PN, who seek to project their own failures onto others.”
