A 19-year-old Irishman has been arrested in Portugal on suspicion of stabbing four Dutch tourists in the holiday resort of Albufeira, Algarve police have confirmed.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning when the Irish youths became irritated by the noise made by the Dutch, who are said to be the ninth person. All of the people involved are aged between 17 and 21.
A friend of the two Dutch youths told Dutch media that three of them were stabbed in the abdomen and one in the leg. According to a statement from Portuguese police, “four male victims were attacked with blades and were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.”
The Dutch Embassy in Portugal was offering help to the holidaymakers and their families but did not disclose the extent of the injuries.
Portuguese police said the young man was charged with attempted murder. The statement did not mention whether anyone in the Irish group was injured.
Police have not yet said whether they expect to make additional arrests.
According to local websites Portugal NewsAlbufeira authorities have just launched a campaign to try to “improve” the behavior of tourists in public places in the town and have stepped up policing.
