After a two-year hiatus, the 600MW Mukonglong Hydropower Station Project in Zhaxi Gangzi has now resumed and completed construction.
According to the letter sent by the project, Jaipur Cash and Bhutan Construction Development Corporation (BCDC) will seek preliminary contract works by mid-July.
Some crews have already arrived at the project site for initial operations, while Tata Bhutan Renewable Energy (BRE) is in discussion with the power company for a strategic partnership, and the contractor’s role is to carry out civil works, including cliffs, lighthouses, underground water diversion channels and preparatory works.
The initial project included water diversion and renovation of the Head Race Underground.
Strategic partnership with Tata for construction of dams, power plants and Head Race Underground financing will be initiated once decision and loan are finalized.
According to project officials, “this can help with construction” when preparatory work begins.
The preparation work is expected to cost Rs 1.5 million, with electricity to be provided by the Bhutan Renewable Energy Corporation (BRECC).
Temporary works must commence within 30 days of receipt of the complaint letter.
Project officials said the contractor is expected to pay Rs 2,000 crore to Jaipur Kashi and Rs 99,100 crore to Bhutan Construction and Development Corporation.
Kunsel said the contractors include Rigsar Construction and Indian Engineering and the contract has been awarded to Balicha Engineering Company and the two companies are likely to collaborate.

The Mkholongchu hydropower project will not be able to proceed and will be suspended in 2022. The two companies had to cancel the joint venture project after they were unable to reach an agreement.
Earlier, the financing of the Mkholongchu hydropower project was expected to be constructed by Bhutan Renewable Energy Company (BRE) and Satluj Jal Bidisity Corporation (SJBNL) with equity share of 70%:30%.
Bhutan Construction Development Corporation will complete 20% of the water supply and underground road construction, while the remaining works will be funded 80% by the Jaipur Cash Scheme.
Both the companies welcomed the move but SJBNL objected to direct award of some works to Indian contractor companies and they have been asked to give it to Bhutan Construction Development Corporation.
The Bhutan Construction Development Corporation (BCDC) has refused to accept the proposal, which risks affecting the country’s development.
