July 31, 2024 (GEBIT) – Sudanese Army Chief Abdel Fattah Burhan escaped a drone assassination attempt at a military graduation ceremony in Gebit, eastern Sudan on Wednesday. Five people, including students and an officer, were killed.
This was the first such attack in the Red Sea state. Home to many government ministries and foreign embassies, Gebit has served as an alternative capital since the start of the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April.
Sudan’s military spokesman said the military’s air defenses intercepted two “hostile drones” that were targeting the ceremony that Burhan had just left. Local sources told Sudan Tribune that the drones were likely suicide drones. Burhan safely recaptured Port Sudan.
The attack followed a series of drone strikes by the RSF against various security targets in Kosti, White Nile State. An officer was killed and a building at Imam Mahdi University was damaged. Witnesses said at least five drones were involved, making it the largest drone attack in the city so far.
The RSF has increasingly used drones to attack areas controlled by the army, but has never claimed responsibility for the attacks. The strategy began with an attack on an army post in Atbara in April and has since expanded to the cities of Gedaref, Shendi, Kosti and Kenana.
