Kabale First Class Magistrate Julius Mutabazi on Tuesday charged and granted bail to Allan Kanyesigye, 18, who was accused of making defamatory statements against Rukiga County MP Roland Bish Ndyomugyenyi.

Kanyesigye was charged with defamation and offensive communication in violation of Sections 170 and 180 of the Criminal Code and Section 25 of the Computer Misuse Act 2011.

The prosecution claimed that on June 21, 2024, the defendant used a WhatsApp account in the name of Allan Kanyesigye in Kabale District to illegally publish defamatory statements against Rukiga County Councillor Roland Bish Ndyomugyenyi.

The prosecution told the court that Allan Kanyesigye used his WhatsApp number to post a list of MPs suspected of corruption in various groups and he deleted the name of one accused of corruption on social media and replaced it with that of Rukiga County MP Roland Bish Ndyomugyenyi.

After the charges were read out, he pleaded not guilty and applied for bail.

Mutabazi said the court allowed bail in the case when he provided two sureties who were later found to be substantial and granted bail of Sh300,000 in cash, while the bail of Sh10 million was set for each of the two sureties instead of cash.

The case was subsequently adjourned to September 3, 2024 for retrial.
